Ladakh – Land of High Passes

La Wdags… land of high passes Ladakh…!

Ladakh, ‘the Land of High Passes,’ is a beautiful region. With snow-capped peaks, clear blue skies, barren mountains and meandering rivers.

Ladakh is very picturesque! It’s not only known for its scenic beauty but also for some of the most difficult treks, beautiful lakes, the magnificent mountains, the colours of the sky are a sight to behold. Vegetation may be scarce, but stunning and awe inspiring beauty is spread all over. The plains and mountains are so different from each other. In the lap of these there are Gompas, Stupas and monasteries.

Now a Union Territory and integral part of our India, Ladakh was a sovereign kingdom 900 years ago. It lies on Latitude 34˚   10-12 North and Longitude 77˚ – 34–48 to East. A large area out of 97000 sq Kms, amounting to 38000 sq Kms is under Chinese occupation since 1962.  Ladakh is bounded by two mighty mountain ranges, the Karakoram in the North and great Himalayas in the South. It is then traversed by two more majors, Zanskar and Ladakh ranges. Ladakh lies above 9000 fts at Kargil to 25000 fts at Saser Kangri, in Karakoram Range. The temperature plummets to minus 20˚ in winter in Leh. But the thin air makes the heat more intense here, inviting sunstroke and a frost-bite at the same time. Nubra Valley is a high altitude cold desert with sand dunes and scanty vegetation, a tri-armed valley located to the North-East of Ladakh. Virtually it is an arid high altitude desert.

The snow fall on high mountains, are source of water to the great lakes Tso Moriri, Tso Kar and Pangong Tso etc. these provide life to their vestiges and Ladakh, making it inhabitable. The flora and fauna of Ladakh is rich but, almost sporadic and often completely absent at higher altitudes, such as, near the Snowline.

Since ancient time this was a traditional trade rout, from Punjab to the central Asia. Everything, daily provision, spices, salt and even narcotics were traded. This came to be known as ‘Silk Rout’ because of famous “Pashmina” silk or wool. This was procured from local Tsoos or local sheep, and then it was transformed into fine silk in Kashmir and sold. Leh as it is a mid-point was resting and trading place for people.

The beautiful Ladakhi people are different from rest of the people in India. There is a clear Indo-Aryan and Tibetan trait in their physique and appearance, and in living style.
